For her most recent work and first novel – Notre-Dame du Nil, originally published in March 2012 with Gallimard in French – Mukasonga immerses us in a school for young girls, called ”e;Notre-Dame du Nil.”e; The girls are sent to this high school perched on the ridge of the Nile in order to become the feminine elite of the country and to escape the dangers of the outside world. The book is a prelude to the Rwandan genocide and unfolds behind the closed doors of the school, in the interminable rainy season. Friendships, desires, hatred, political fights, incitation to racial violence, persecutions… The school soon becomes a fascinating existential microcosm of the true 1970s Rwanda.

Det här är en intressant bok som handlar om en flickskola i Rwanda. Och handlingen är 15 år innan de oerhört förskräckliga händelserna bland Hutuerna.
Jag lärde mig definitivt något nytt då jag läste den här boken. Jag visste inte hur situationen såg ut i landet då. Att det redan så mycket innan fanns oroligheter och våld. Att tutsina redan få var en minoritet som hutuerna såg ner på. Att de redan då var tvungna att vara försiktiga och rädda gör sitt liv. I flickskolan som boken handlar om, gick det endast två tutsiflickor och de höll sig för sig själva.
Läsvärd och tankeväckande.
